Sturtevant, Notes on edible plants, 1919
Introduction
Edward Lewis Sturtevant (1842-1898) was a farmer, botanist, physician and author.
Sturtevant, Edward Lewis, 1919. Sturtevant's notes on edible plants. Edited by U.P. Hedrick. Albany, J.B. Lyon. 686 p. on line at Archive.org.
- Reprint Sturtevant's Edible Plants of the World. New-York, Dover, 1972. 686 p. (same pagination).
This book has long been a standard. Surtevant gathered a lot of notes about 2897 edible plant species, taken from 560 ancient and modern sources. The notes were edited after his death by Hedrick, who developed the authors' citations. The book consists of the notes themselves, without any synthesis. They are consistent for many species, but scanty for others. The book is now obsolete, but points to many old sources that would otherwise remain overlooked.
A quick survey shows that Sturtevant made a good use of European and North-American sources. He compiled references from pre-linnean botanists, but had access to only some of the many editions of such books. His information is much more limited when it deals with tropical areas.
Organisation of this on-line version
The text was uploaded from the site of the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine (Bisbee, Arizona), revised and corrected according to the original edition, 1972, by Michel Chauvet. Latin names of plants have been italicized, and expanded when the genus name was abridged.
The text is organised in a set of pages. A page may include only one big genus (no genus being split in several pages), or several small ones. Each species appears as a section, which makes direct links easy. The text of all pages has been uploaded without formatting, apart from Latin names. It will later be formatted, and links to the species page with the accepted modern name added. Footnotes will finally be added, because they give access to the exact pages of the sources quoted. But this is a lengthy task.
