Usages
Often grown as a hedge for the protection of plant cultures from animals and wind, also planted as fence for meadows. The wood is utilized for the production of veneer and toys as well as of charcoal for preparing gunpowder and fireworks. It has been reported, that the plant produces a carcinogen, also found in the vegetables and drinking water of the adjacent soil. The latex of the plant furnishes a rubber, rich in resin. The shoots, roots, and latex serve medicinal purposes. The plant and its latex are also used to stupefy fishes. In the southern USA and Okinawa it has been experimentally cultivated for the extraction of oil from the latex.
