Usages
Common in gardens in tropical regions, e.g. in Mexico, Central America and India. Cultivated occasionally in Iraq. The leaves provide a hard fibre usable for ropes. In Mexico, the roots rich in saponins are used as soap and the flowers are eaten as vegetable. The fleshy fruits and flowers are edible. Ethanolic extracts from the leaves containing saponins possess anti-inflammatory activity. The plants are medicinally used for ear ache. Also cultivated as ornamental in tropical and subtropical homegardens, in temperate zones as container plant. Vegetative micropropagation in vitro has been successful.
Mansfeld.
