|texte=In W Africa (Sierra Leone, Gabon, Nigeria) and in Ethiopia cultivated especially in coastal regions as living fence, cemetery and fetish tree. Cultivated also in India. Introduced to Cuba. Roots, decoctions of the bark and the juice are used as remedy. Leaf fibres are used for making clothes. The leaves contain saponins. In Tanganyika, Gabon and Kenya, the fresh root is chewed, and root or bark decoctions are applied against pain and fever. Widely cultivated as ornamental. Different cultivar groups are distinguished according to the variegation patterns. These are the ''D. fragrans'' Compacta Group, ''D. fragrans'' Deremensis group and several further cultivars.
