Usages
In S India, planted as a timber tree which supplies a highly prized wood, but also grown as windbreak for Citrus plantations. In other parts of India cultivated for the colouring matter santalin, which is obtained from the dark red to black heartwood. This is used for colouring leather, silk, cotton etc and as caste sign. The wood was used also for medicine, it was formerly a valuable product of the Indian export trade, the colour is exported even nowadays.
