Usages
In India the most commonly cultivated species of Erythrina, widespread as ornamental tree, as living fence, hedge plant (columnar cultivar), shade tree and for soil conservation (mainly in S India); for India and SE Asia very important is the use as support for betel, black pepper, jasmine, grape, yams. The species is simultaneously used as leaf forage and medicinal plant (in Vietnam especially grown for officinal purposes). It is often a component of agroforestry systems and all over S and SE Asia and the Pacific islands a valuable multipurpose tree. In Indonesia leaves and young sprouts are eaten as vegetable. Sometimes the species is grown as hedge plant or shade tree in E Africa or the American tropics, too (Jamaica, Brazil). The species is very variable and as ornamental tree grown in many tropical countries of the world.
