Usages
Frequently cultivated as hedge plant and ornamental shrub in the tropics. Used as food, medicinal plant, fibre crop and for magical purposes. In Java, the young shoots are cooked and eaten together with rice. The fleshy rhizome contains up to 20% sugar, mainly fructose. It is eaten cooked or baked, used as a natural sweetener (New Zealand) or is used for production of an alcoholic beverage. In the Hawaian kitchens, food is wrapped into the leaves for cooking. Used for fever, headache and to disinfect wounds in Polynesia and Thailand, and for diarrhoe in W tropical Africa. In New Guinea, this species is a stimulant and magic plant used to stimulate fierceness of young warriors. Leaves are knotted together as measure for houses-building. Also cultivated as indoor foliage plant. The species is also propagated in vitro.
