Usages
- barbatus : Cultivated as a hedge plant and for erosion control in E tropical and southern Africa, India and Sri Lanka. Grown as a food plant in India and E tropical Africa for its root tubers, eaten pickled. The diterpene forskolin from the root tubers is used in the preparation of drugs against cardiomyopathy, glaucoma, asthma and certain cancers. Recent breeding activities in India and China after the exploitation of natural populations for medicinal purposes. Cultivated as a medicinal plant in northern Brazil, where an infusion of the leaves is used as a malaria remedy and for liver disorders. Has been considered to be the progenitor of Plectranthus esculentus N.E. Br.
- grandis : Often cultivated as a hedge plant in Zaire. The leaves are used as a remedy.
