Usages

Cultivated in China, European Russia (Volga-Don area, Dnepr area) and occasionally in other parts of Europe. Rhizomes and thick roots are used medicinally (Rhizome Rhei, Radix Rhei). The cultivated strains however belong mostly to subsp. tanguticum.
Wild distribution: Mountains of the northern frontier area between China proper and Tibet, in the upper forest belt.
