Classification

Il existe 70 espèces de Phaseolus en Amérique, d'après Freytag et Debouck (2002). Les haricots de l'Ancien Monde sont maintenant tous placés dans le genre Vigna, qui se distingue par sa carène florale non spiralée, ou dans le genre Lablab. Parmi les Phaseolus, 5 espèces ont été domestiquées, et 3 sont arrivées en Europe.
