|texte=Frequently cultivated in S Mexico, the Antilles and in tropical South America. Introduced to tropical Asia (India, Philippines) by the Portugueses and Spaniards in the 16th cent. In Indonesia it was grown early in the 17th cent. and has been adopted later in S China, N Queensland, Polynesia, Hawaii and tropical Africa. Here and there it has escaped from cultivation and is found feral in pastures, forests and along roadsides. Now worldwide distributed and naturalized in the tropics. Economically the most important species of the genus. The fruits are usually eaten raw. They contain a fragrant, juicy, sweet, delicious pulp with a high quantity (35-42 mq/100 g) of vitamin C, slightly higher than in grapefruit. The ripe pulp can be utilized as a flavouring for ice-cream and refreshing drinks. The unripe fruits, seeds, roots and leaves have vermicidal and insecticidal properties.
