Distribution

From the Philippines and Sulawesi (Indonesia) to New Guinea and New Britain.

Uses

In Sulawesi the pounded bast is traditionally used as barkcloth.

Observations

A tree with unisexual, spicate inflorescences. Male flowers with 4 tepals, imbricate in bud. Female flowers with fleshy, dark purple to black perianth. Fruit adnate to the enlarged perianth. Seed with subequal cotyledons.
