Triticum aestivum L.
- Gamah.
- Important cereal. In the oases a special type is grown (LEHMANN and HAMMER 1983a, PERRINO et al. 1984a) with often pubescent spikes and inflated awns - var. khorossanicum (Vav.) Mansf., var. transcaspicum (Vav.) Mansf., var. submeridionaleinflatum (Palm.) Mansf. (see HAMMER and PERRINO 1985). These forms have been formerly described as T. spelta L. var. saharae Ducellier. But already CIFERRI and GARAVINI (1941) realised that these wheats belong to T. aestivum. They used the combination T. vulgare var. saharae (Ducell.) Cif. et Garav. This combination is together with T. vulgare var. oasicolum Ducell. cited in the synonymy of T. aestivum var. transcaspicum (Vav.) Mansf. by MANSFELD (1951). Several other varieties are mentioned by AL-JIBOURI (1966a and b). The morphological variation in the material studied by us will be treated in a separate paper.

Triticum durum Desf.
- H'mir, gamah.
- Important cereal in C. and T. (BREHONY 1960, BURU 1960), in other parts rare. The variability of T. durum is close to that observed in Sicily (PERRINO and HAMMER 1983). Many introductions from South Italy are likely. The infraspecifie variation of Libyan T. durum will be described in a separate paper.

- Rare admixture in cereal fields of C.
- Lit.: KEITH 1965, AL JIBOURI 1966a
(Triticum spelta L.)
- Reported by several authors (e.g. KEITH 1965) but the material is T. aestivum (see discussion under this species).
