Plant of the month 2012 February
From PlantUse English
The plant of the month: Bouea macrophylla
This intriguing new fruit (called gandaria or maprang) appeared in Paris Chinatown some years ago. This relative of the mango can be eaten whole (with the peel), and tastes very nice (sweet with some reminiscence of mango). The seed is of a curious mauve colour, which makes the cut fruit very decorative.
This species as long been known in South-East Asia, where they seem to prefer eating the immature fruit. A breeding program has been developed in Thailand, and good cultivars have been obtained for export of mature fruit.
Be ready to enjoy this fruit, as the season begins in February.
