- By flat, we mean here a height/width < 1, which includes all the traditional cultivars of Portugal. When the Golden Delicious was introduced, as its height/width ratio is > 1, it was perceived as a "pear-apple", and hence called pêro. This name is confusing, but distinct from pêra = pear.
