Vernacular names
- Indonesia: kosal (Sumatra), katiau senaman, katiau tanduk (Kalimantan).
Distribution
Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
Uses
The timber is possibly used as nyatoh or bitis.
Observations
- A small to medium-sized tree up to 25(-35) m tall with bole up to 35 cm in diameter.
- Leaves evenly distributed, narrowly obovate to obovate or elliptical to lanceolate, 9-32 cm × 3-12.5 cm, secondary veins diminishing until inconspicuous near margin, glabrous, stipules up to 2.5 mm long, caducous.
- Flowers with sepals finely hairy on both sides, 8-lobed corolla glabrous except between the stamens, 16-18 stamens and usually glabrous ovary.
- Fruit ellipsoid or ovoid, 2-2.5 cm × 1-1.5 cm, 1-seeded.
- Seed with thin endosperm and thick cotyledons.
M. korthalsii grows in lowland rain forest up to 300 m altitude and usually occurs scattered.
