Vernacular names

  • Malaysia: wi empunok ruai (Iban, Sarawak).

Distribution

Widespread in the 1st and 2nd Divisions of Sarawak, Brunei. In Peninsular Malaysia, it is confined to Johor and is considered a vulnerable species likely to become endangered. Also found in Natuna Islands in the South China Sea.

Uses

The cane is used for making walkingsticks and the fruits are edible. The shoots are eaten as palm cabbage.

Observations

A solitary and stemless rattan with ecirrate leaves. Occurring in a wide range from sealevel up to 1000 m altitude, being particularly common in transitional forest between dipterocarp forest and heath forest.
