Vernacular names

  • Malaysia: wi empunoh, wi empunok (Sarawak); rotan belubu (Sabah).

Distribution

Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Borneo. D. periacantha has not been found further north than Johor state in Peninsular Malaysia.

Uses

Split cane is used for sewing up fish traps; the fruits and cabbage are edible.

Observations

Robust, clustering rattan, rarely more than 10 m tall. Stem without leafsheaths 15 mm in diameter, with sheaths 3080 mm in diameter. Very common rattan found in lowland to hill dipterocarp forest, in swampy sites and lower slopes up to 1000 m.
