The official PROSEA site has long been closed. It reopened in 2020, but always partially. It seems now (2022) to have disappeared. It has been duplicated at PROTA4U and here on Pl@ntUse.

Pages have been uploaded by a bot from the texts sent to the publisher. They are later revised manually. The result is that some errors may have gone unnoticed. Such errors arise from the fact that formats change somewhat from one book to the other, and that special codes have not always been interpreted correctly (Unicode did not exist at that time).

If you find typographical errors, feel free to correct them. An administrator will then validate them. To do so, you only have to register and edit.

Many pages deal with whole genera. Redirect pages (appearing in italics) allow to detail the species included in a genus treatment.

In a first phase, only texts have been uploaded.

In a second phase, pages are formatted ; synonyms and description are organized in bulletted paragraphs ; links to and from the species pages (English and French) are added. So, when you see "PROSEA on Pl@ntUse" or "PROSEA sur Pl@ntUse", it means that there exists a PROSEA page. Linedrawings are integrated with the captions and the sources of illustration. Some errors are corrected (spaces before or after parenthesis, codes for Greek letters...). Literature sources appearing as numbers are added.

Many plants have changed scientific name. We maintain the pages with the original name. But we create a redirect page, allowing to query PROSEA with the newly accepted name.

The links to the official PROSEA site were deleted, as many pages are missing, and the site changed its address.

Several species and genera have been treated in two use groups. Unlike PROTA, where information was aggregated into a unique text, PROSEA texts are separate. We keep such "double pages" separate on Pl@ntUse, with titles indicating the book they come from. E.g. Diospyros blancoi (PROSEA Fruits) and Diospyros blancoi (PROSEA Timbers). Only when pages are very short, we merge both texts into one page.

Later on, we will consider the insertion of wood anatomy photos, if available. Wood properties are presented as a big table in the book. Its inclusion poses problems we will only later consider. Michel Chauvet (talk) 17:42, 13 February 2016 (CET).

Timbers and Medicinals

The Timbers and Medicinals volumes offer a distinct structure. All genera (in Timbers) and most of them (in Medicinals) are described in a page, after which small subpages detail "selected species". The information about a species has to be found both in the genus and the species statement.

This was a good solution for a book, but presents some difficulties for a database. To facilitate consultation, we introduced the following procedure:

  • At the end of a genus page, we put a list of the "selected species", which acts as a set of links to the relevant species statements.
  • Each species is given a separate page, with at the end a link to the Main genus page.

See Afzelia and Agathis as examples.

In the species pages, references appear as numbers, which refer to a list. Such numbers will be changed into the right references, but we will do that at a later stage, as it is time consuming. Michel Chauvet (talk) 11:40, 10 February 2016 (CET).
