Distribution

New Guinea.

Uses

On Mount Hagen, the whole plant is used for alleviating birth pains and to accelerate the expulsion of the placenta.

Observations

A herb up to 50 cm tall, stem simple or distally slightly branched; lowest leaves ovate, short, middle leaves oblong, larger, c. 4 cm × 1 cm, upper leaves linear-lanceolate, 5-6 cm long, scabrous-pubescent; inflorescence slender and dense, bracts 3-4 mm long, strongly ciliate; calyx c. 5 mm long, corolla with 6-7 mm long tube and 3-4 mm long lobes, pinkish; fruit triangular-conical, c. 5 mm long. B. ciliata occurs in mountainous regions at about 1600 m altitude, in grassland and on deforested slopes.
