Description

Common in Maghreb, whereas Artemisia absinthium is rare or introduced.

Popular names

According to Bellakhdar (1997), its Arabic name is an abreviation of šībat al-‘aǧūz, meaning "white hair of the old woman", by reference to its white color.

  • food : commonly used (in small quantities) in infusions, particularly "thé à la menthe" from Morocco. Young shoots are sold for Maghrebi consumers in French markets.
  • ornamental: one of the beautiful shrubs planted in South-European gardens.
