  • Laos: 'üang dông

Distribution

From India to Indo-China, Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia (Java, Sumatra).

Uses

Young shoots are cooked and eaten as vegetable in Indonesia.

Observations

  • Very variable, ascending, succulent, robust, perennial herb, 0.5-8 m tall.
  • Leaves sheathed; leaf-blade lanceolate, 12-48 cm × 3.5-12 cm, sometimes pubescent or with soft hairs along the margins.

In shady, humid localities, from 50-1500 m altitude. Mainly based on the hairiness of the leaves, three forms are distinguished (considered by some to be different species).
