|texte=Cultivated mainly in Brazil, S China, India, Sri Lanka, Zaire, Kenya, South Africa, Fiji; but also in further (sub)tropical countries. The leaves serve for the production of etheric oil. The oil contains 65-85% citronellal, other constituents are citronellol, cineole and pinenes. It is used for perfumes, soaps and disinfectants and has an antibacterial and insecticidal property. The tree is also used for its timber and is often planted in parks and avenues as ornamental.
