*A medium-sized tree up to 30 m tall, rarely up to 40 m, with a straight columnar bole up to 100 cm in diameter; leaves .*Leaves with (8-)10-12 leaflets, leaflets 3.5-12.5 cm × 1.5-5 cm, firmly leathery and densely velvety pubescent beneath; flowers .*Flowers with 11-13 mm long woolly hirsute calyx lobes lacking spines; pod .*Pod elliptical, ovate to circular, up to 12 cm long, with numerous slender, stiff spines. ''S. velutina'' occurs scattered in non-inundated places on sandy or clayey soils, often on hillsides, sometimes in marshy places. The density of the timber is 520-730 kg/m<sup>3</sup>at 15% moisture content.
