Vernacular names
- Indonesia: tengkawang bani, tengkawang goncang, tengkawang rambai (West Kalimantan)
- Malaysia: engkabang bintang, melindang (Sarawak).
Distribution
Western Borneo.
Uses
The timber is used as light red meranti but the trees are often protected by traditional rights. S. splendida is one of the main sources of illipe nuts.
Observations
- A small to medium-sized tree up to 30 m tall, with bole up to 65 cm in diameter, buttresses low.
- Leaves oblong, papery, 8.5-23 cm × 4.2-11 cm, with 9-12 pairs of secondary veins, lustrous, stipules up to 2.5 cm long.
- Stamens 15, anthers broadly ellipsoid, with long, slender appendages, stylopodium spindle-shaped.
- Larger fruit calyx lobes up to 7.5 cm × 2.3 cm.
S. splendida is a fairly common riparian species of periodically flooded clayey alluvium.
