Vernacular names

Distribution
Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
Uses
The timber is used as dark red meranti of excellent quality.
Observations
- A medium-sized to very large tree up to 60 m tall with bole branchless for 18-30 m and up to 160(-235) cm in diameter, buttresses up to 4 m high, twigs compressed.
- Leaves lanceolate, 6-9 cm × 2-3 cm, with 15-18 pairs of secondary veins not prominent beneath.
- Stamens 15, anthers subglobose with long, slender appendages, stylopodium pear-shaped.
- Larger fruit calyx lobes up to 10 cm × 1 cm.
S. platyclados occurs in hilly to mountainous areas on deep soils with high humus content at (200-)700-1350 m altitude. The density of the wood is 340-880 kg/m3 at 15% moisture content. See also the table on wood properties.
