Vernacular names
- Indonesia: mayang batu, nyatuh sudu-sudu (Sumatra), merading (Kalimantan).
Distribution
Sumatra, Java and Borneo (Kalimantan). Erroneously recorded from Peninsular Malaysia.
Uses
The timber is locally used for posts and planks in house building.
Observations
- A medium-sized tree up to 30 m tall with bole up to 50 cm in diameter.
- Leaves more or less clustered at tips of twigs, obovate or elliptical, 7-12 cm × 2-5 cm, secondary veins joined or diminishing until inconspicuous near margin, glabrous, stipules up to 2 mm long, caducous.
- Flowers with sepals sericeous outside and glabrous inside, 8-lobed corolla pubescent on both sides, c. 16 stamens and ovary hairy at base.
- Fruit ovoid to ellipsoid, 2.5-4 cm × 1.5-2 cm, with thin pericarp, 1-seeded.
- Seed brown, with thin albumen and thick cotyledons.
This species occurs in coastal and mountainous regions, in primary forest; in Java up to 1200 m altitude. The timber is reportedly not very durable.
