Distribution
India, Burma (Myanmar), the Andaman Islands, Indo-China, southern China, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, the Philippines, Sulawesi, Timor and the Moluccas.
Uses
The timber is used locally for house construction and boats, especially in Sulawesi, where the logs may have large dimensions.
Observations
A medium-sized to large tree, up to 45 m tall, with bole up to 100(-150) cm in diameter; leaves (3-)5-foliolate, leaflets glabrous (except midrib below); inflorescence terminal, spreading, paniculate; calyx lobes subequal, small or minute (up to 2.5 mm long), corolla yellowish or purplish; fruit subglobose to pear-shaped, up to 12 mm long, purplish-black when mature. V. quinata is found in forest up to 1300 m altitude. The density of the wood is reported as only 340-660 kg/m3at 15% moisture content in Indonesia.
