  • The barleys of Libya have been studied by CIFERRI and GARAVINI (1941), ERROUX (1956) and AL-}IBOURI (1966a). Four-rowed barleys (var. hybernum Vib.) are predominant as it is true for the oases in the whole of the Sahara desert (CHEVALIER 1932). Two-rowed barleys are rare. In the Cyrenaika the two-rowed

  • barleys (var. nutans (Rode) Alef., convar. intermedium (Kôrn.) Mansf. var. haxtoni Kôrn.) may be considered as segregates from introgressions of the wild H. spontaneum Koch into the four-rowed cultivated barleys (HAMMER et al. 1985). The two-rowed barleys of the desert oases show a connection to barleys from Ethiopia (CIFERRI and GARAVINI 1941). Worth mentioning are the barleys with naked grains (convar. distichon (L.) Alef. var. violaceum Kôrn., convar. deficiens (Steud.) Mansf. var. nudideficiens Kôrn. - see HAMMER and PERRINO 1985).
