Two species are indigenous to eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean islands.  === ''Barringtonia asiatica'' ===''[[Barringtonia asiatica]]'' (L.) Kurz (distributed from eastern Africa, through tropical Asia to Australia and the Pacific) has erect stout terminal inflorescences and broadly pyramidal fruits up to 12 cm long and wide. It is used as a timber tree and in traditional medicine.
