*An armed, straggling shrub; leaves .*Leaves elliptical, 5-10 cm × 2-5 cm, lobed, almost glabrous above, sparsely hairy below; inflorescence .*Inflorescence composed of 1-2 flowers on a peduncle of about 2.5 cm long; calyx .*Calyx funnel-shaped, thorny, corolla about 2 cm in diameter, blue; fruit .*Fruit about 12 mm in diameter, glabrous, orange when mature, seated on an enlarged calyx.  ''S. sarmentosum'' occurs as a weed in gardens and ruderal places.
