Bauhinia (Sturtevant, 1919)

Bauhinia esculenta Burch.


South Africa. The root is sweet and nutritious.

Bauhinia lingua DC.

Moluccas. This species is used as a vegetable.

Bauhinia malabarica Roxb.

East Indies and Burma. The acid leaves are eaten.

Bauhinia purpurea Linn.

East Indies, Burma and China. The flower-buds are pickled and eaten as a vegetable.

Bauhinia tomentosa Linn.


Asia and tropical Africa. The seeds are eaten in the Punjab, and the leaves are eaten by natives of the Philippines as a substitute for vinegar.

Bauhinia vahlii Wight & Am.


East Indies. The pods are roasted and the seeds are eaten. Its seeds taste, when ripe, like the cashew-nut.

Bauhinia variegata Linn.


East Indies, Burma and China. There are two varieties, one with purplish, the other with whitish flowers. The leaves and flower-buds are eaten as a vegetable and the flower-buds are often pickled in India.

Beckmannia erucaeformis Host.


Europe, temperate Asia and North America. According to Engelmann, the seeds are collected for food by the Utah Indians.

Begoniaceae. BEGONIA.

East Indies and Burma. The leaves, called tengoor, are eaten by the natives as a pot-herb. Hooker says the stems of many species are eaten in the Himalayas, when cooked, being pleasantly acid. The stems are made into a sauce in Sikkim.

Brazil. The leaves are used as cooling salads.

East Indies. Henfrey says the plants are eaten as pot-herbs.

Himalayas. The leaves have an acid taste and are used as food.

Compositae. ENGLISH DAISY.

Europe and the adjoining portions of Asia. Lightfoot says the taste of the leaves is somewhat acid, and, in scarcity of garden-stuff, they have been used in some countries as a pot-herb.

Bellucia aubletii Naud.


Guiana. A tree of Guiana which has an edible, yellow fruit.7

Bellucia brasiliensis Naud.

Brazil. The fruit is edible.
